Julian Assange: “If Trump Doesn’t Keep His Promise, I Will”
by Jeff Powers in Campaigns Aug 30, 2017
Julian Assange issued a warning to the FBI Wednesday: If you conceal information on the Hillary Clinton investigation, WikiLeaks won’t.
Citing a “lack of public interest,” the FBI has shut down a request to turn over files related to its investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails. The issue became a major problem for the Democratic candidate as she pursued the White House in 2016.
Ty Clevenger, an attorney in New York, filed the request in 2016. His reaction to the news, “Frankly, I am stunned I should have to explain why my request pertains to a matter of public interest.”
Hours after the FBI announced it would not release the files, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange sent the following tweet:
FBI just refused someone's FOIA request for Clinton probe files claiming a lack of public interest. Thanks FBI. You keep WikiLeaks strong.
It’s not clear why the FBI chose to conceal its findings, or when WikiLeaks will release what it has. The timing is interesting though as Clinton is set to go on her book tour starting September 18.

CIA sneak undetectable ‘malicious’ implants onto Windows OS - WikiLeaks
CIA sneak undetectable ‘malicious’ implants onto Windows OS - WikiLeaks
Published time: 31 Aug, 2017 11:27
WikiLeaks claim the leaks came from within the CIA.
Windows machines are targeted by the CIA under ‘Angelfire,’ according to the latest release from WikiLeaks’ ‘Vault7’ series. The documents detail an implant that can allow Windows machines to create undetectable libraries.
‘Angelfire’ consists of five components – ‘Solartime,’‘Wolfcreek,’ ‘Keystone,’ ‘BadMFS,’ and the ‘Windows Transitory File system,’ according to a statement from WikiLeaks released on Thursday.
‘Solartime’ modifies the partition boot sector of Windows XP or Windows 7 machines when installed, allowing the ‘Wolfcreek’ implant to load and execute. ‘Wolfcreek’ can then load and execute other ‘Angelfire’ implants.
Previously known as ‘MagicWand,’ ‘Keystone’ loads malicious user applications on the machine which never touch the file system, leaving “very little forensic evidence that the process ever ran” according to WikiLeaks.

WikiLeaks Publishes Info on CIA's Tool to Secretly Load Implants on Computers
The WikiLeaks whistleblowing platform released Thursday new documents from the Vault 7 series, which contain information on the tool which the CIA used to load and execute implants targeting computers using Microsoft Windows operating systems.
The WikiLeaks whistleblowing platform released Thursday new documents on the CIA tool called Angelfire. It is an implant comprising of five components: Solartime, Wolfcreek, Keystone (previously MagicWand), BadMFS, and the Windows Transitory File system, according to Wikileaks.
The CIA reportedly uses Angelfire to load and execute malicious user applications on target computers. One of tool's components modifies the boot sector, allowing the implants to be downloaded simultaneously with Windows' boot time device drivers. Loaded implants never touch the file system, so it is rather difficult to track the process.
"Like previously published CIA projects (Grasshopper and AfterMidnight) in the Vault7 series, it is a persistent framework that can load and execute custom implants on target computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system (XP or Win7)," the statement from Wikileaks reads.
The revelation comes a week after Wikileaks released documents on the CIA's ExpressLane tool, which the agency uses to collect extra biometric data from US liaison services, such as the National Security Agency (NSA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The publictaions are made as part of the Vault 7 project, a large archive of CIA-related classified documents that Wikieaks has obtained. The platform released the first batch of the documents in March, containing a total of 8,761 documents.
According to the website, a large archive comprising various viruses, malware, software vulnerability hacks and relevant documentation, was uncovered by US government hackers, which is how WikiLeaks gained access to some of the data from the trove.

WikiLeaks Website Apparently “Hacked” By OurMine Using DNS Poisoning
WikiLeaks Website Apparently “Hacked” By OurMine Using DNS Poisoning
August 31, 2017
https://fossbytes.com/wikileaks-hacked-by-ourmine-dns-poisoning/
No, this is not some bug bounty contest hosted by the Wikileaks – their website known for its high-profile leaks against big names like the CIA. The website was attacked (now restored) by the hacker group called OurMine who call themselves White Hats trying to point out bugs.
Users weren’t able to access the website on Thursday morning which displayed the following message.
“Hi, it’s OurMine (Security Group), don’t worry we are just testing your…. blablablab, oh wait, this is not a security test! Wikileaks, remember when you challenged us to hack you?”
“Anonymous, remember when you tried to dox us with fake information for attacking wikileaks ?”
“There we go! One group beat you all! #WikileaksHack lets get it trending on twitter!”
The cyber-attack that embarrassed Wikileaks was an act of DNS poisoning done by OurMine. Wikileaks’ actual servers weren’t compromised during the process. And the website was able to get back online after a while.
This type of attack involves configuring a DNS server to redirect to a new web page URL, hosted on some other server, for a given IP address during resolution. In this case, the new web page was hosted on OurMine’s servers where the users saw the message. You can read more about how DNS works in this detailed post.
It’s not the first time OurMine has gone after Wikileaks. They launched two DDoS attacks against the website between December 2015 and July 2016.
The latest attack also brings to attention the enraged attitude of the hacker group against Anonymous. The personal details of OurMine members were doxed by Anonymous after they failed to accept Anonymous’ request to stop DDoSing Wikileaks.
OurMine is a known hacker group which was in the news last year for compromising the Twitter accounts of CEO Jack Dorsey and Yahoo’s Merissa Meyer. And the Pinterest and Twitter accounts of Facebook’s boss Mark Zuckerberg.
Recently, the OurMine also dropped their wrath on the HBO’s social media accounts. The hack was a part of the bigger hacking campaign against HBO by various attackers.

WikiLeaks’ website appears to have been hacked by a group called OurMine, whose previous hacks have targeted tech CEOs, companies, and news sites.
As of early Thursday morning, the WikiLeaks.org homepage displayed a message that read: “Hi, it’s OurMine (Security Group), don’t worry we are just testing your…. blablablab, oh wait, this is not a security test! Wikileaks, remember when you challenged us to hack you?” READ MORE IN ARTICLE

WikiLeaks 'hacked' as OurMine group answers 'hack us' challenge
Julian Assange’s data-leaking site defaced via DNS attack, showing humiliating messages for organisation that prides itself on being tech savvy
Thursday 31 August 2017 05.32 EDT Last modified on Thursday 31 August 2017 11.18 EDT
WikiLeaks suffered an embarrassing cyber-attack when Saudi Arabian-based hacking group OurMine took over its web address.
The attack saw visitors to WikiLeaks.org redirected to a page created by OurMine which claimed that the attack was a response to a challenge from the organisation to hack them.
But while it may have been humiliating for WikiLeaks, which prides itself on technical competency, the actual “hack” appears to have been a low-tech affair: the digital equivalent of spray-painting graffiti on the front of a bank then claiming to have breached its security.
The group appears to have carried out an attack known as “DNS poisoning” for a short while on Thursday morning. Rather than attacking WikiLeaks’ servers directly, they have convinced one or more DNS servers, which are responsible for turning the human-readable “wikileaks.org” web address into a machine-readable string of numbers that tells a computer where to connect, to alter their records. For a brief period, those DNS servers told browsers that wikileaks.org was actually located on a server controlled by OurMine.
It is unlikely WikiLeaks own servers were breached. The DNS protocol is a notoriously weak link of the internet due to the ease with which it can be compromised by both malicious individuals and state actors. READ MORE IN ARTICLE

Ron Paul & Philip Giraldi: Senate Declares War on WikiLeaks
Ron Paul and Daniel McAdams Posted on August 24, 2017
VIDEO
The US Senate Intelligence Committee has passed an Authorization bill that specifically targets WikiLeaks and its senior personnel as a “hostile non-state intelligence agency” that receives assistance from foreign state intelligence services. This designation would green-light all manner of US overt and covert action against the news organization and its employees, in blatant violation of the First Amendment. Is the US, under a president that said “I love WikiLeaks,” about to go to war with WikiLeaks? Former CIA officer Phil Giraldi brings his vast experience to bear in today’s Liberty Report. What might we expect?

Intelligence Committee Pins A 'Surveil Me' Sign On Wikileaks' Back In Latest Authorization Bill
https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20170823/09441338070/intelligence-committee-pins-surveil-me-sign-wikileaks-back-latest-authorization-bill.shtml
President Trump seemed to think Wikileaks was a fine establishment while on the campaign trail. As long as Wikileaks kept serving up DNC documents, it could do nothing wrong. Since his election, however, things have changed. The administration is plagued by leaks. Even though Wikileaks hasn't played a part in those leaks, it has continued to dump CIA documents -- something the White House isn't thrilled with.
Back in April, the new DOJ -- under the leadership of 80s throwback AG Sessions -- announced it had prepared charges to arrest Julian Assange. This was something Obama's administration talked about, but never actually got around to doing. Pursuing Assange and Wikileaks for publishing leaked documents would set a dangerous precedent, paving the way for domestic prosecutions of news agencies.
Fortunately, nothing has moved forward on that front yet. But it appears at least a few Senators would like to further distance Wikileaks from any definition of journalism. As Spencer Ackerman reports for The Daily Beast, the Senate Intelligence Community wants to redefine Wikileaks as a hostile entity.
The committee… wants Congress to declare WikiLeaks a “non-state hostile intelligence service,” which would open Julian Assange and the pro-transparency organization – which most of the U.S. government considers a handmaiden of Russian intelligence – to new levels of surveillance.
On Friday, the committee quietly published its annual intelligence authorization, a bill that blesses the next year’s worth of intelligence operations. The bill passed the committee late last month on a 14-1 vote, with Democrat Ron Wyden of Oregon as the lone dissenter, owing to what he calls the “legal, constitutional and policy implications” that the WikiLeaks provision may entail.
The latest intelligence authorization bill runs nearly 60 pages. Perhaps the committee members adding this toxic little pill thought no one would read it all the way to the end. The very last section of the bill (Section 623 to be precise) is titled "Sense of Congress on Wikileaks." It asks for legislators to take an official stance on the group.
It is the sense of Congress that WikiLeaks and the senior leadership of WikiLeaks resemble a non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors and should be treated as such a service by the United States.
As Ackerman points out, the language in the bill channels CIA head Mike Pompeo, who is understandably (and continually) incensed by Wikileaks' publication of documents pertaining to CIA surveillance tools. Pompeo himself is a fair-weather friend of transparency, having tweeted his praise for Wikileaks while it was still dumping DNC documents.
This could put Wikileaks under (even more) surveillance and would likely allow site visitors, donors, and correspondents to become surveillance targets themselves.
“It would allow the intelligence community to collect against them the same way they collect against al-Qaeda,” [former House Intelligence Committee staffer Mieke] Eoyang said. “If you think you’re helping WikiLeaks to aid a transparency organization, the US government fundamentally disagrees with you and you could find yourself on other end of NSA scrutiny.”
As is usually the case when the Senate Intelligence Committee offers up questionable or terrible proposals, Senator Ron Wyden was the sole committee member to vote against the authorization bill.

New Senate Intelligence Authorization Bill Includes Language Threatening WikiLeaks
Posted on August 24, 2017
The Senate Intelligence Authorization Act (SB 1761), introduced Friday by Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr (R-NC) and already approved by the committee, concludes with a one sentence section – Section 623 – that appears to threaten WikiLeaks with potential harsh actions. The section categorizes the news organization, which helps expose information obtained from whistleblowers, as resembling “a non-state hostile intelligence service.”
“Senior leaders” of WikiLeaks, such as Julian Assange who will not leave the Ecuador Embassy in London for fear of being arrested and sent to the United States for detention or prosecution, are also included in the categorization.
Section 623 of the bill reads in full:
SEC. 623. Sense of Congress on WikiLeaks.
It is the sense of Congress that WikiLeaks and the senior leadership of WikiLeaks resemble a non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors and should be treated as such a service by the United States.
Writing Tuesday at the Daily Beast, Spencer Ackerman noted the section’s language “echoes almost exactly CIA director Mike Pompeo’s scathing April speech calling WikiLeaks a ‘non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors like Russia,’ a departure from the ‘I love WikiLeaks‘ rhetoric from then-candidate Trump.”

Ron Paul & Philip Giraldi: Senate Declares War on WikiLeaks

The US Senate Intelligence Committee has passed an Authorization bill that specifically targets WikiLeaks and its senior personnel as a “hostile non-state intelligence agency” that receives assistance from foreign state intelligence services. This designation would green-light all manner of US overt and covert action against the news organization and its employees, in blatant violation of the First Amendment. Is the US, under a president that said “I love WikiLeaks,” about to go to war with WikiLeaks? Former CIA officer Phil Giraldi brings his vast experience to bear in today’s Liberty Report. What might we expect?

KSA: Wikileaks’s Assange accuses Al-Arabiya of ‘absurd fabrications’ over alleged secret deal with Qatar
KSA: Wikileaks’s Assange accuses Al-Arabiya of ‘absurd fabrications’ over alleged secret deal with Qatar
The Australian whistle-blower and founder of Wikileaks has attacked Saudi-owned media al-Arabiya for what he called “absurd fabrications” after an article published by the media accused him of allegedly entering into agreement with Qatar to withhold the release of some sensitive information on Qatari officials for some “huge sums of money”.
The article in question made claims about Qatar’s role in a number of scandals. It described an alleged Qatari conspiracy to undermine Bahrain; accuse Abu Dhabi of financial support for terrorists; alleged secret relations with Israel and a mutual agreement with WikiLeaks to block the publication of cables about Qatari support for three terrorists wanted by the US, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) reports.
Assange was cited by Sawsan Al-Shaer; a Bahraini journalist and writer, for the conspiracy under which Assange would refrain from publishing two sensitive cables out of seven on Qatari officials.
“WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said he has seven cables about Qatar,” she said.
“Only five were published while the other two were not after Qatar negotiated with the website’s administrator, who requested huge sums of money in order not to publish them as they contained dangerous information about meetings with Israeli and American officials and incitements against Egypt and its people”.
Assange took to tweeter to denounce the machinery aiming at involving him into the diplomatic row between Qatar and its neighbors, namely Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain plus Egypt.
“The Al Arabiya network (HQ in UAE) has been publishing increasingly absurd fabrications as the UAE v Qatar dispute continues. One from today,” he tweeted.
Qatar’s neighors and Egypt have severed ties with the tiny gas-rich country over its alleged support for terrorism and incitement for revolt in their territories. Qatar has rejected the accusations.
The UAE-based Saudi media denied accusing the Wikileaks founder.
In its defense, Al-Arabiya distanced itself from the article, saying that it was an opinion piece that originally appeared in Arabic in a separate Arabic-language newspaper, MEMO notes.

WikiLeaks Reveals Exactly How CIA Secretly Collects Our Biometric Data
The WikiLeaks whistleblowing platform released on Thursday a new batch of classified documents about the tools used by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to secretly collect biometric data from US liaison services.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the whistleblowing site, the released documents show one of the cyber operations the CIA conducts against liaison services which includes among many others the National Security Agency (NSA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The CIA reportedly secretly used ExpressLane as an additional tool to collect data from biometric collection systems. The agency's Office of Technical Services that provides biometric collection system for liaison services around the world was supposedly not enough or did not work at all.
Julian Assange, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of WikiLeaks speaks via video link during a press conference on the occasion of the ten year anniversary celebration of WikiLeaks in Berlin, Germany, October 4, 2016.
The software run under the cover of an upgrade, which was the reason why the liaison officers were unable to detect the program.
The whistleblowing platform released the first batch from the Vault 7 project in March, containing a total of 8,761 documents.
Some of the latest releases were dedicated to a CIA project targeting SMS messages sent and receive on Android devices and to CIA tools for stealthy hacking of Apple's operating system. as well as to a CIA tool allowing to remotely hack into computers and steal images of users' video streams.

The bill requires approval by the full Senate and House and the president's signature before it can become law.
A recent bill introduced by the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee wants Congress to declare WikiLeaks a “non-state hostile intelligence service,” which would open Julian Assange and the pro-transparency organization to new levels of surveillance.
The 2017 Intelligence Authorization Bill, released on Friday, approves the next year’s worth of intelligence operations. It contains a final clause stating that WikiLeaks should be considered a "cyberthreat."
"It is the sense of Congress that WikiLeaks and the senior leadership of WikiLeaks resemble a non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors and should be treated as such a service by the United States," it said.
The bill had passed the Committee on a 14-1 vote in July. Democrat Senator Ron Wyden, the only one who voted against the bill, said his decision was due to concerns over the denouncement.
“My concern is that the use of the novel phrase ‘non-state hostile intelligence service’ may have legal, constitutional, and policy implications, particularly should it be applied to journalists inquiring about secrets,” Wyden said in a Tuesday press release touting three provisions he was able to add to the bill.
“The language in the bill suggesting that the U.S. government has some unstated course of action against ‘non-state hostile intelligence services’ is equally troubling."

Senate bill would label WikiLeaks ‘non-state hostile intelligence service’
Congress will formally consider WikiLeaks a “non-state hostile intelligence service” if lawmakers adopt the annual Intelligence Authorization Act passed 14-1 by a Senate panel last month — a provision the bill’s sole dissenter now cites as his reason for rejecting it.
Sen. Ron Wyden, Oregon Democrat and the only member of the Senate Intelligence Committee to cast a ballot against the 2018 authorization act during last month’s vote, said Tuesday his decision was driven by the inclusion of language specifically targeting WikiLeaks, the antisecrecy website responsible for publishing millions of pages’ worth of U.S. state secrets ranging from military documents and diplomatic cables to internal Democratic Party emails.
The provision was included at the very end of the annual intelligence authorization act passed in committee and quietly introduced in the full Senate on Friday amid summer recess.
“It is the sense of Congress that WikiLeaks and the senior leadership of WikiLeaks resemble a non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors and should be treated as such a service by the United States,” the section says.

Assange Slams US Bill Labeling WikiLeaks 'Non-State Intelligence Service'
Julian Assange has criticized a bill proposed by US Senate Intelligence Committee, which labels WikiLeaks "a non-state intelligence service."
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has criticized a bill proposed by US Senate Intelligence Committee, which labels the whistleblowing website "a non-state intelligence service."
"WikiLeaks like many serious media organizations has confidential sources in the US government. Media organizations develop and protect sources. So do intelligence agencies. But to use this to suggest, as the 'Pompeo doctrine' does, that media organizations are 'non-state intelligence services' is absurd. It is equivalent to suggesting that the CIA is a media organization… It is clear that if the 'Pompeo doctrine' applies to WikiLeaks then it applies equally if not more so to other serious outlets," Assange said in a statement on Wednesday.
The text of the bill, which was passed by US Senate Intelligence Committee by a 14-1 vote in July, was released on August 18. It still requires approval by the Senate and the House of Representatives as well as the signature of US President Donald Trump.
The US intelligence community believes WikiLeaks was linked to alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, which Moscow repeatedly denied. The organization published emails from the campaign chairman of then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, which caused scandals that might have contributed to Trump's victory.
In April, CIA Director Mike Pompeo labeled the organization as "a hostile intelligence service," following a series of leaks of CIA's materials.READ MORE IN ARTICLE

Ron Wyden tacks measures onto snoop funding bill
THEY ATTACK THE MESSENGER WHO EXPOSE THEIR CRIMES AND NOT THE CRIMINALS WHO COMMIT CRIMES
Every year, US Congress must pass a new Intelligence Authorization Act to continue funding Uncle Sam's spies for the next 12 months. This year, the act passed, as expected, the committee stage smoothly with only one minor bump in the road: Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR).
Wyden objected to a clause in the bill [PDF] that described WikiLeaks as a "non-state hostile intelligence service," which was inserted after the website pissed off enough people in government. The wording would give the intelligence services more power to investigate the site and its founder Julian "I'm not in a cupboard" Assange.
This isn't to say Wyden is defending Assange: the senator fears journalists will also be labeled hostile intelligence services for embarrassing the administration.
"My concern is that the use of the novel phrase 'non-state hostile intelligence service' may have legal, constitutional, and policy implications, particularly should it be applied to journalists inquiring about secrets," said Senator Wyden.
"The language in the bill suggesting that the US government has some unstated course of action against 'non-state hostile intelligence services' is equally troubling. The damage done by WikiLeaks to the United States is clear. But with any new challenge to our country, Congress ought not react in a manner that could have negative consequences, unforeseen or not, for our constitutional principles."
In the end, the act passed the Senate intelligence committee in a vote of 14-1. You can easily guess which side Wyden took.
The senator did, however, manage to get three amendments into the bill, one of which could stymie President Trump's suggestion that the US and Russia should join forces on a cybercrime unit to investigate hacking. If such a scheme is mooted, Congress will have to be informed as to what intelligence is shared and how. The President backtracked on that idea, for what it's worth.
Wyden's second amendment is about mounting fears over hacking mobile phones via SS7 protocol flaws that can turn any mobe into a spy in your pocket. The amendment requires the intelligence agencies to report any evidence that foreign powers are using the SS7 flaw for surveillance purposes.
Finally, Wyden's third amendment will require US intelligence officials to work with the Treasury Department's Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence on a report into Russian money laundering in the US. Such data could be very useful in the ongoing probe into possible Putin interference in the last US elections.
The tweaked proposed funding legislation will now be submitted to the House of Representatives and the Senate for their approval and modifications. Whether the amendments survive all the way is up to Congress, and whether Trump signs it is up to him.

The timing of this is certainly suspect..
This was published a few days after the Congressman's meeting with Assange which resulted in reports that Assange had proof that Russia was not involved in any DNC hacking
This has the Duuhhh and Hhhmmmm...WRITTEN ALL OVER IT..
Expert of Malware Blow the Whistle on Russian Hacking
A Ukrainian author of malware who built the PAS Web shell- a PHP based imbed used to remotely execute commands on hacked systems - has turned himself in to Ukrainian authorities. He has been cooperating with the probe by Federal Bureau of Investigation into the seeming Russian hacking of the Democratic National Committee.
Profexor provided information to the FBI and Ukrainian investigators which reveals that how hackers, in part, used a combination of purpose-built and community tools as part of what researchers have labeled as the threat group "APT 28" which also known as "Fancy Bear."
According to a report by New York Times on Wednesday, a hacker known as "Profexer" apparently is the one who made the malware which broke into the servers of Democratic National Committee (DNC) and collected thousands of emails which WikiLeaks dumped online for the whole world to see.
The two hacker groups apparently responsible for the attack on the DNC are supposed to be Advanced Persistent Threat 28, also known as Fancy Bear and the Russian group Cozy Bear. http://Newsweek.com posted on August 16th, 2017, stating that each is believed to be backed by military intelligence arm of Russia.
Apparently, Profexer got frightened in December, when the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI revealed a report about the Russian hacking effort to the public, which it dubbed Grizzly Steppe. That report referred to malware program of Profexer and hence, he became silent on the hacker forums in early January.
The malware's loot somehow made its way to WikiLeaks whose founder is Julian Assange, who has insisted that he did not gain the DNC emails from the Russian government. WikiLeaks first published these in July 2016 which was three days before the convention held by DNC in Philadelphia.
The damaging emails included major exposures about the attempts to "undermine" by DNC and ultimately led to the resignation of Debbie Wasserman Schultz as chairwoman of DNC.
Fancy Bear and its twin Cozy Bear have operated more as centers for organization and financing rather than arming, training and deploying hackers to carry out a particular mission like just another military unit. Also much of the hard task such as coding is subcontracted to private and often crime-tainted vendors.

Assange refused to disclose info on Russia's aggression in Ukraine - FP
Assange refused to disclose info on Russia's aggression in Ukraine
In the summer of 2016, as WikiLeaks was publishing documents from Democratic operatives allegedly obtained by Kremlin-directed hackers, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange turned down a large cache of documents related to the Russian government, U.S. news publication Foreign Policy has reported.
"WikiLeaks declined to publish a wide-ranging trove of documents - at least 68 gigabytes of data - that came from inside the Russian Interior Ministry," reads the statement.
It says that in 2014, the BBC and other news outlets reported on the cache, which revealed details about Russian military and intelligence involvement in Ukraine. However, the information from that hack was less than half the data that later became available in 2016, when Assange turned it down.
The Russian cache was eventually quietly published online elsewhere, to almost no attention or scrutiny.
The logs, which were provided to FP, only included WikiLeaks's side of the conversation.
"As far as we recall these are already public," WikiLeaks wrote at the time.
"WikiLeaks rejects all submissions that it cannot verify. WikiLeaks rejects submissions that have already been published elsewhere or which are likely to be considered insignificant. WikiLeaks has never rejected a submission due to its country of origin," the organization wrote in a Twitter direct message when contacted by FP about the Russian cache.
WikiLeaks's relationship with Russia started out as adversarial. In October 2010, Assange and WikiLeaks teased a massive dump of documents that would expose wrongdoing in the Kremlin, teaming up with a Russian news site for the rollout.
In November 2010, WikiLeaks began to release documents from its cache provided by Chelsea Manning, which included cables from U.S. diplomats around the world, including Russia.
WikiLeaks also partnered with the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, but only a handful of stories were published out of almost a quarter of a million files from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.
According to the report, meanwhile, Assange's position on Russia was evolving. Assange in 2012 had his own show on the Kremlin-funded news network RT, and that same year, he produced episodes for the network where he interviewed opposition thinkers like Noam Chomsky and so-called "cypherpunks."
Questions about Assange's links to Russia were raised last year, when the Daily Dot reported that WikiLeaks failed to publish documents that revealed a 2 billion euro transaction between the Syrian regime and a government-owned Russian bank in 2012.
